What are the methods of fertilizer granulation?

What are the methods of fertilizer granulation?
There are several main forms of fertilizer granulation, each with its own characteristics and applicable scenarios:

1、 Disc granulation
Principle: By using the rotation of a disc, powdered fertilizer is rolled in the disc, while water or binder is sprayed in to aggregate into balls.
characteristic
The process is simple and the equipment cost is low.
The produced granular fertilizer has a relatively uniform size and a rounded appearance.
The particle strength is moderate, but it may break under certain pressure.
Applicable scenarios: Suitable for small and medium-sized compound fertilizer production, where nutrient content requirements are not particularly high.

2、 Drum granulation
Principle: Powdered fertilizer is added to a tilted and rotating drum. During the rolling process, the material is agglomerated by spraying water or introducing steam, and gradually forms particles through the rotation and gravity of the drum.
characteristic
The particle size is uniform, the strength is high, and it can withstand significant pressure.
It can handle various types of fertilizer raw materials and has a wide adaptability.
The production process is relatively continuous and the production efficiency is high.
Applicable scenarios: Commonly used for large-scale production of compound fertilizers, such as granulation of fertilizers such as urea and ammonium phosphate.

3、 Extrusion granulation
Principle: Powder fertilizer is extruded from the mold holes under high pressure through an extruder mold, forming particles of a specific shape.
characteristic
No need for drying, energy-saving and water-saving.
The particle shape is regular, generally cylindrical or square.
Strong adaptability to raw materials, especially suitable for heat sensitive fertilizers.
Applicable scenarios: Commonly used for granulation of organic fertilizers, compound fertilizers, and other fertilizers, especially for fertilizers that are not suitable for high-temperature treatment.

4、 Spray granulation
Principle: Spray the slurry containing fertilizer components into mist like droplets through specific equipment, and then use hot air or flue gas provided by a hot blast stove to quickly dry and solidify these droplets into granular fertilizer.
characteristic
The particles are spherical in shape and uniform in size.
The product has good fluidity and dispersibility.
The production process has a high degree of automation, but the equipment investment is relatively large.
Applicable scenarios: Mostly used for producing high nitrogen compound fertilizers and some water-soluble fertilizers.

In general, different forms of fertilizer granulation have their own advantages, disadvantages, and applicable scenarios. In actual production, the appropriate granulation method should be selected based on factors such as fertilizer type, production scale, and cost.
